The 4 Cs Of Diamonds: Cut, Clarity, Color, & Carat

The 4 Cs, as they are known within the jewelry industry, are the standard way to measure the beauty, craftsmanship, and value of a diamond.。

# 1 cut

"Diamond cut" refers to the proportion and symmetry of the quality of the diamond. These elements determine how much light a diamond captures and reflects, and thus how bright it shines. This is a direct result of the craftsman's skill in shaping and cutting diamonds.

There are four grades of diamond cutting: ideal, very good, good and poor.

If you compare two diamonds of different cut grades, you will find that the higher cut grade the shinier the diamond. They also vary in price, with the higher the cut grade, the higher the price. In 4 C, cutting is generally considered the most important, as it has the greatest impact on the appearance and quality of the diamond.

Priority is given to cutting grade

Since cutting has the greatest impact on the overall appearance of a diamond, we recommend that you place cutting grade first. The clarity and colour of the diamond should be considered secondary. We do not recommend buying larger diamonds if it means sacrificing cutting quality.

Round diamonds and profiled diamonds

All diamonds that are not classically round are classified as "profiled diamonds". Due to the neat arrangement of the facets, only classic round diamonds can achieve the desired cut grade. That's not to say fancy diamonds aren't popular -- far from it. However, they are of different grades; If you are looking for princess square, cushion or Letine shaped shaped diamonds, you are more recommended to cut the Very Good shaped diamond.

# 2 clarity

Clarity refers to the inclusion, or lack thereof, of a diamond. While inclusions in diamonds are unavoidable, if they are visible to the naked eye, they can have a significant impact on the quality of the diamond.

The shape of the diamond will also have a greater impact on the clarity grade. Faceted patterns in bright cut diamonds such as round and princess squares can hide some defects, but stepped cut diamonds such as emeralds and Asche have larger open countertops that make inclusions more visible.

The minimum clarity grade in the Mondia diamond stock is SI2. These diamonds may have small visible inclusions. If you are looking for step cut diamonds, we recommend that your minimum clarity grade is VS2, and the VS grade is flawless to the naked eye.

If you want your diamonds to be clean and stunning, it is recommended that the clarity level of diamonds be VVS2 and above.

# 3 color

Counterintuitive as it may sound, a diamond's color rating actually measures how much color it reflects.

The diamond color scale starts with a "D" and goes up to a "Z." A diamond designated as a "D" is by no means colorless -- however, it appears to be pure white, even when examined closely by gemologists under a 10x magnifying glass. Diamonds designated as "Z", on the other hand, look yellow or brown.

Colorless (D, E, F) : P works well with platinum, palladium, and platinum.

Almost colorless (G, H, I, J) : Perfectly matched with white, yellow or rose gold.

Bold colors (K, L) : Perfect with gold or rose gold.

Purchase Tips: 

While diamonds in the "colorless" category reflect the purest white light, most consumers struggle to see any color in the "nearly colorless" category. That's why a "nearly colorless" diamond is a safe choice if you're going to set it in yellow or rose gold jewelry, because the warm color of the metal makes any yellow in the diamond less obvious. However, if you want the purest white diamond, choose a "colorless" diamond and set it in white or platinum.

# 4carat

Carats are a standard measure of the weight of a diamond. Carat is also related to size (how big a diamond looks), although it is not the only factor in determining size. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can have different sizes depending on shape, weight distribution and cut quality.

It is worth noting that some diamond cuts emphasize only weight. These stones can sacrifice brightness and symmetry to provide larger carat shapes. At Ritani, we recommend striking a balance between cut and carat weight to ensure that diamonds shine symmetrically.

.25CT - Focuses on finding very good or ideal cut grades for shining diamonds.

50CT - It's hard to see content in a 0.50 carat diamond, so please lower the clarity grade and focus on getting the best color and cut grade within your budget.

75CT - At this size, any visible inclusions are not as noticeable, so you can choose a lower clarity grade, such as SI1 or SI2. Looking for very good or ideal cutting grades.

1CT-GRABS if you're looking for a single-stone engagement ring, keep an eye out for a polished and symmetrical cut with an ideal grade of Excellent. If you want to match the secondary stone, you need to buy a higher color and clarity grade.

1.25CT - If buying a 1.25 carat or larger diamond, choose VS2 or better clarity, as inclusions are more visible in larger diamonds.

1.5CT - As an above average purchase price, focuses on medium color and clarity while maximizing cut grades.

2CT - Some SI inclusions can be seen with the naked eye, so avoid any diamond with less clarity than VS1.

3CT - Larger size will magnify the inclusions, so if you choose a diamond with a clarity grade lower than VS1, make sure it is pure. And choose non-fluorescent diamonds.

4CT - Close to ultra luxury, look for diamonds with inclusions located on the side of the diamond pavilion that are not obvious to the naked eye.

5CT - Extreme luxury; Choose a 3EX grade diamond.

Choose your carat weight

When you're ready to choose carat weights for your diamonds, remember that size isn't everything -- cut grade strongly affects the quality and beauty of a diamond; So, though to a lesser degree, are the colors and clarity levels.

For best value, consider a diamond that weighs slightly less than the carat you initially thought of. For example, if you are considering buying a 1-carat diamond, consider buying 0.95 to 0.99 carats. The difference in visual size is negligible, but the savings can be significant. You can use these savings to purchase a higher cut grade or a more luxurious ring setting.
